ECD staff brush up on health and hygiene matters

15 September 2024

The City’s Community, Arts & Culture Development Department joined hands with City Health to host a series of training sessions for Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) this week. Staff from 150 ECDs participated in the initiative to promote child health.

The training sessions took place on the  9, 12 and 13 September at the Rocklands and Wynberg Civic Centres, with staff  from 150 ECDs benefitting from the Health and Hygiene training. Participants were from ECDs in subcouncils12, 13, 17, 18, 19 and 20.

The health and hygiene training covered topics such as the importance of immunisation, managing transmittable diseases such as TB, HIV, measles, polio and meningitis, as well as an explanation of the road to health concept linked to child development.

Other issues on the training agenda were hygiene protocols around personal care, food preparation and handwashing as well as matters of nutrition.

'Adherence to health and safety regulations is critical for any sector, but especially our ECDs where children spend a large part of their day. It is incumbent on us all to know what the expectations are, and to consistently work at meeting and maintaining those expectations. The health of our children, but also the people who care for them at these centres cannot be compromised. The City thanks everyone who participated in this training – we are very happy with the turnout, and hope to expand these opportunities to facilities in other parts of the metropole,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
